What is Jobs with Justice?

Jobs with Justice is part of a national community and labor coalition that seeks to build solidarity between unions and the community in the struggle for workers' rights. They support the right to organize, a living wage, health care for all, and community organizing. Jobs with Justice demands that government and employers do what is right for their workers, as well as our communities.

The Coalition to Save Long Island Jobs has recently affiliated with the National Jobs with Justice organization, becoming its local affiliate.

What actions have been taken?

The Coalition has, in less than 2 years:

Organized the first annual Long Island conference of Labor and the Community
Developed a Strike Support Network
Helped organize community support for striking UAW workers at King O'Rourke and nurses at Plainview hospital, for members of CSEA at Long Beach Hospital, and construction workers at several sites, most recently in connection with the informational picket at Tritec
Obtained the support of Suffolk County Executive Bob Gaffney for legislation that will make Suffolk County sweat-free
In cooperation with the National Labor Committee, organized protests against the sale of Driscoll strawberries
Worked with the NYS and LI Labor-Religion Coalitions on their Sweat Free Schools Campaign
Joined in campaigns to promote living wage legislation in Nassau and Suffolk Counties
Facilitated community support of labor candidates for local office
Created a newsletter - Labor's Rising Tide - the first of its kind, specifically aimed at bringing together labor and community activists

What needs to be done?

There is always work to be done. But for now, the Coalition is working in close cooperation with the new leadership of the AFL-CIO on issues such as:

Opposition to the WTO, the MAI, and "fast track" legislation
Support for the Union Cities initiative
Support for the Right To Organize campaign
Support for the Farm Workers
